The 33

The 33 reminds us that we are capable of incredible things. We saw this story unfold on the news in 2010. The movie gives us insight into human nature. For those trapped inside the mine, those affecting the rescue, and those loved ones who could only wait and pray for a solution, there is love, pain, hope, and hopelessness. The 33 shows us the best and worst of humanity in a hearth moving way.

Mine Safety

Mining is a dangerous job. The workers who put their lives on the line everyday to work in mines around the world are to be respected. In the mining accident portrayed in the movie, there are many people to share the blame for not preventing the accident. Everyone from the mine safety inspector, to his boss, to the owners of the mine, to the government share in the blame. None of them ever really take responsibility for their actions.

People’s Hearts

There’s a lot of heart in this movie. It is inspirational in many ways. For the people who are yearning to get their loved ones out of the mine, they form a city near the entrance to the mine to support each other and to continuously apply pressure to those in a place to affect the rescue.

The government worker who applies pressure to the political establishment to rescue the miners is an example of the type of person that we all hope we’d be faced with the same situation. In a sea of bureaucratic inertia and political maneuvering, he manages to bring a nation’s resources together to make the seemingly impossible possible.

The Miners

Above all else, the miners display compassion and love for each other in profound ways. It is nearly impossible to begin to imagine the stress that they survived. Some of them wanted to end it all, but their fellow workers mustered the strength to hope when the situation seemed beyond hope.

Inspiration

I’m not certain where one draws the strength to hope when all seems lost. Faith in God’s would give that strength to many. The desire to see your wife and family again would drive many. The fight to not give into death would sustain some. Wherever these men found the strength to support each other, it is an inspiration to us that they did.

The movie isn’t in theaters now, but you can buy The 33 from Amazon. It’s well worth it to see this movie.

Cheers,
Jack
